Caergwrle Castle was constructed by Dafydd ap Gruffydd between 1277 and 1282. It is believed the castle was built on the site of a hill fort overlooking the valley. Dafydd ap Gruffydd abandoned the castle around 1282 and disabled it so that it might not be used against him in his rebellion. However, King Edward I repaired the castle and presented it to Queen Eleanor. There was a fire in 1283 which destroyed the residential portion of the castle. In 1308, Caergwrle was granted to Cromwell for repair. By 1335 the castle was again in ruin.
