Coity Castle is an amalgam of several building periods. The ringworks around the castle are from the 1170's and attrributed to Payn de Turbeville. The fortification has its origin with the Normans who settled this area. Like many of the castles in this area, Coity has changed hands from Norman to Welsh and Welsh to Norman many times. In the late 1300's, Roger Berkerolles anticipated a French invasion and began construction to add the outer ward and remodel the inner ward of the castle. The keep was extensively remodeled to provide residential quarters. Owain Glendwr laid seige to Coity in 1404 and the outcome is not known. However, the owner died in 1411 causing an inheritance dispute which resolved with William Gamage taking ownership. The North gate was probably added by Gamage for further fortification. Coity stayed with the Gamages and was maintained until the 1850's. The castle was turned over to the state in 1929 and in ruins by that time. |
