Manorbier Castle : From above

Most of the defenses, walls and towers, were added around 1230. A chapel was constructed about 1260. Construction continued throughout most of the 13th century and later into the 16th and 17th centuries. The later structures added comfort to the castle.

Manorbier Castle remains are from several different centuries. The first keep was established in the 12th century by the de Barri family. The most famous of the de Barri family, Gerald, was born in 1146 at the castle. Manorbier is considered a Marcher baron stronghold. The de Barri's participated in the Norman Invasion of Ireland and used the income from their Irish properties to maintain Manorbier Castle.
