A reference is made to Dinbych-y-Pysgod (Little Town of the Fishes) in the 9th century for this fishing village on the coast. The Normans liked the defendable location and built a castle around 1153. The castle and town were destroyed in 1260 by the Welsh. Not much remains of the original town.

The de Valence reconstructed the castle and the town with walls in 1280. The wall, which encircles the town, is mostly intact and integrated into the town layout.

St Catherine's Fort was built in 1869 on a rocky island that can be reached by foot when the tide is low.
