Dinefwr was the seat of Kingdom of Southwest Wales, Deheubarth. Rhys ap Gruffudd used this location as a stronghold from 1163 to consolidate power. The are no remains from that time. These ruins are from the 13th and 14th centuries. The keep was built first, around 1240, then the curtain walls were erected to create the inner and outer wards. The keep may have had more floors. Between 1675 and 1740, a summer house was built on top and it is believed that some height was removed to make it stable.
