Dolwyddelan is considered the birthplace of Llywelyn the Great, however, since he was born in 1173, he was probably birthed at an earlier site a small distance away. The keep in this castle is estimated to have been built between 1210 and 1240 by Llywelyn. Dolwyddelan's surrounding fortifications were wood structures which were replaced by stone at a later date. The fortification fell to Edward I in 1283. At this time, the top floor of the original keep and a second tower in the west were added. The castle was occupied until the middle 16th century. By the middle 1700's, the castle was in ruins. The castle underwent restoration in the early 19th century and is as it stands today. |
